Pennsylvania County Makes Special Effort Against Drunk Drivers

How concerned are local law enforcement officials about drinking and driving? Any Philadelphia DUI attorney would probably be able to tell our readers that many have dedicated squads with special training in detecting drunk drivers and enforcing DUI laws. This is true throughout the country, not just in Pennsylvania. However, one particular part of Pennsylvania, York County, has made some headlines for the sheer number of DUI arrests that have taken place within county limits.

According to a recent article, state troopers in York County seem to have made it their mission to detect and arrest drunk drivers. 747 DUI arrests were reportedly recorded in York County in 2012 alone – that’s a record. And that’s a lot of people who probably didn’t want to have to look for a drunk driving defense attorney.

One supervisory trooper in the county has said that the number may be a result of how patrolling officers spend their time. When they aren’t responding to a specific call, the trooper stated that his officers spend their time on the interstate, where they are on the alert for the telltale signs of drunk driving. He said this is part of a conscious effort on their behalf to make sure that people know they are on the roadways watching.

If it seems to our readers that society continually ratchets-up the pressure on those who are arrested for DUI, they aren’t mistaken. Many states have increased penalties for those who are arrested with a blood alcohol content way beyond the .08 minimum, and most have increased penalties for repeat offenders. Anyone who is facing a DUI charge should immediately begin to assess whether or not they have any good defense options. If not, it could be time to begin plea bargaining.
